What we do

Our Focus Areas

Our work spans across seven strategic pillars that define our long-term vision

In a world facing increasing environmental challenges, initiatives like the Gudumale Sustainability Initiative (GSI) are essential for creating a sustainable future. GSI focuses on several key areas to address pressing environmental issues and promote a greener, more sustainable planet. Let’s take a closer look at the focus areas of GSI and how we are making a difference.

01

Climate Action

Promoting climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies to build climate resilience. Advocating for climate-smart policies and technologies.

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, with far-reaching effects on the planet. GSI recognizes the importance of taking action to combat climate change and works to promote sustainable practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote carbon neutrality. By taking a proactive approach to both adaptation and mitigation, we can better protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

02

Nature and Biodiversity

Conserving ecosystems, habitats, and endangered species. Promoting sustainable use of natural resources. Addressing threats like deforestation, desertification, and habitat loss.

03

Pollution Prevention and Waste Management

Reducing pollution of air, water, and soil. Tackling plastic pollution, chemical waste, and e-waste. Supporting cleaner production and consumption.

Waste management and pollution reduction are key focus areas for GSI, as they play a significant role in protecting the environment and public health. GSI works to promote recycling, waste reduction, and sustainable waste management practices to reduce pollution and promote a cleaner environment. By implementing innovative solutions and raising awareness about the importance of waste management, GSI is creating a cleaner, healthier world for future generations.

04

Environmental Justice

Strengthening environmental laws and institutions. Promoting environmental rights and justice to protect communities, uphold equity, and empower citizens in the face of ecological challenge.

Environmental justice is an essential component of GSI’s work, as they strive to promote equity and inclusion in environmental decision-making. GSI works to ensure that all communities have equal access to clean air, water, and green spaces, regardless of income or social status. By advocating for environmental justice and working to address environmental inequalities, GSI is creating a more just and equitable world for all.

05

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Safe drinking-water, sanitation and hygiene are crucial to human health and well-being. We promote safety and clean water to all.

Access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene is a basic human right, yet millions of people around the Ethiopia still lack access to these essential services. GSI works to ensure that communities have access to clean water, safe sanitation facilities, and hygiene education to improve public health and well-being. By investing in water infrastructure and promoting good hygiene practices, GSI is improving the lives of communities around the Sidama Region.

06

Renewable and Clean Energy

By transitioning to clean, renewable sources of energy, we aim to reduce our environmental impact and preserve the planet for future generations.

Renewable energy is a key focus area for GSI, as they recognize the importance of transitioning to clean, sustainable energy sources. By investing in solar power projects, GSI is reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting a more sustainable energy future. By harnessing the power of renewable energy, GSI is helping to combat climate change and create a more sustainable world for all.

07

Disaster Risk Reduction

Building Resilient Communities

In a world where natural disasters are becoming more frequent and severe, disaster risk reduction is crucial for building resilient communities. GSI works to reduce the risk of disasters by implementing measures that increase community preparedness and resilience. By investing in early warning systems, infrastructure improvements, and disaster recovery plans, GSI is helping communities withstand the impacts of natural disasters.
