GSI Partners with Wendo Genet City to Mark World Environment Day 2025

The Gudumale Sustainability Initiative (GSI) joined hands with the Wendo Genet City Administration in the North Sidama Zone to commemorate World Environment Day under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The event brought together community leaders, religious representatives, women, youth, and plastic waste pickers to promote sustainable practices in tackling plastic pollution.
Mr. Melese Alemayehu, Founder and Executive Director of GSI, led an awareness-raising session, emphasizing the importance of the 5Rs—Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink—to foster a cleaner and more sustainable future. He called on communities to take action and advocate for solutions to curb plastic waste.

Mr. Agezegn Shuramo, Director of the Wendo Genet City Administration Environmental Protection Authority Office, underscored the urgent need for collective action. “With available science and solutions, governments, businesses, and stakeholders must accelerate efforts to address this crisis,” he stated. The event highlighted the growing global movement to combat plastic pollution, aligning with this year’s World Environment Day mission to mobilize communities toward sustainable practices.
